Grandinetti Contact Numbers: O (305) 792 -1857 F (305) 792 -1653 Program Dates: 10/01/13 through 07/31/14 Target Population: School aged youth The Sunny Isles Police Department recognizes the importance of providing youth with healthy environments and positive role models. The need for safety education is enormous and children today face many challenges both in school and outside of school. Many of the children in our schools are from different countries and speak different languages. This makes visual aids all the more important. Our SRO often uses posters, books, and other visual aids and teaching tools to ensure that the children understand the safety tips and are excited about learning. Program Description By utilizing FY2014 Byrne grant funds, the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department plans to conduct classroom presentations throughout the school year to students in K -4th grade. There are approximately 10 classes in each grade level with an approximate total of 1,072 children. The topics covered include bullying, sexting, car safety, bicycle safety, social media and the dangers within, gun safety, and some things a person should do when someone is trying to harm them. The presentations are 30 to 45 minutes in length. There are a number of visual educational aids used in the presentations as well as a smart board, DVDs, and posters on easels. Our goal is to empower children with the knowledge that will enable them to help themselves in most situations. The greatest challenge in our efforts is to keep them engaged. Educational prizes given to the children who participate and contribute to the classroom discussion encourages eager participation.
