Sunshine Law, Public Records and EthicsThe City's legal counsel must provide regular advice to the members of the CityCommission, City Manager and City staff on Florida's Government in the Sunshine, PublicRecords and Ethics laws.Our attorneys are called upon often to address issues relating specifically to the powersand prohibitions of governmental bodies and the individuals serving on them. In this role,NG&N has provided advice to numerous clients on issues relating to those state laws. Forexample/ in Collier County, we were retained to represent the County during investigationsrelated to allegations of unethical behavior brought against a member of the Board of CountyCommissioners. NG&N provided St. Johns County with advice concerning whether the policiesand practices utilized in the issuance of bonds complied with the open meeting requirements ofthe Sunshine Law and whether a proposed procedural mechanism under consideration wouldcomply with Sunshine Law mandates.In our role as special counsel to the Florida Housing Finance Corporation, Mr. Brownattends monthly Board meetings and renders legal advice on the various laws related toconflicts of interest, gifts, public records, Government in the Sunshine and ethics applicable tothat organization.Mr. Dion recently served as counsel to the Ethics Subcommittee of the Broward CountyCharter Review Commission and provided legal advice regarding the Broward County Code ofEthics.Finally, firm members have lectured extensively on the Sunshine Law and Florida'sPublic Records Act, Chapter 119, Florida Statutes, before government officials, attorneys andstaff. NG&N attorneys are prepared to advise the Mayor, the City Commission, the CityManager and staff on issues relating to these important topics.Land Use, Real Estate and Environmental PracticeAs the chief legal advisor to the City/ the legal counsel must be well versed in all aspectsof land use, real estate and environmental law. The City's legal counsel must work with theMayor/ City Commission, City Manager, City staff and its agencies to maintain the quality of lifefor City residents and the City's natural resources in the face of significant demands fromgrowth and development.In this regard, the City's legal counsel must assist the City in developing, implementingand enforcing land use and environmental regulations, code enforcement regulations andcompliance, reviewing zoning and rezoning requests, negotiating developer agreements andproviding development review.
