Summan• Minutes: Regular Ciny Commission Meeting Januan.16, 201 Cin or Sunnv Isles Beach. Florida
went along with it and 99% of that has been completed. Now .we are sitting here with this
one little segment at a very late date. Mr. Amselem said they are not really asking for design
change. what they are asking for is instead of having coral rock that does not match the
building. The City signs that we have right now that are blue and green does not match the
coral, they match City Hall. What they would like to do is to figure out a way for both of
those designs. the City Hall's presence at the beginning of Sunny Isles Beach with the mosaic
tile would be a better beautification of the entrance.. Mr. Amselem said you are authorizing
him to continue discussion with the City Manager but who is going to be making the
decision? Mayor Edelcup said the decision has been made by this Commission as there was
a meeting, and there was apparently a consensus because otherwise we would not have an
easement.
Former Commissioner Roslyn Brezin said there were several meetings held. She noted that
there was a different President at the Arlen House at the time we obtained the easement. Mr.
Amselem noted that he was however on the Board of Directors. Former Commissioner
Brezin said she had several meetings in her office with the President of the Arlen House East
pertaining to the easement and to what would take place. At the time that we obtained the
easement. there was nothing presented by your Board, by you or by your President of a
rendering showing that you had wanted another color. There was a unity between our
Commissioners. City Manager, and the President of your organization. They did agree that
there was a tentative rendering that was presented, and that original rendering that was
presented was part of the City Landscaping drawing. The one objection that she was faced
with at the meeting in her office was they were afraid that their security was at stake because
that wall is low. and in that area they have to protect the residents. There was no discussion
as to whether it was coral or pink or green or gray. The Mayor and the Commission. and
Police Department are interested in protecting our citizens. So, if it is necessary to make
some type of change .where you have to have a higher wall in that area, something that
matches the rest of the City, there was no change outside of making that wall higher. One
other member Helene Ensweir had said that it certainly would be an improvement over what
they currently have.
City Manager Russo said subsequent to that we had a workshop where we proposed the new
drawings with a higher wall. There was a whole discussion over that wall and then
ultimately the Commission decided to keep with the program of the rest of the streetscape.
He said they will have various choices in terms of the style and everything on the gates.
Commissioner Scholl said he thought rMr. Amselem's folks came to the public hearing
because he remembers that forum. Mr. Amselem said he was not informed of the public
hearing and as the President of the Association he would have known about it and he would
have been present. Commissioner Scholl said people from there attended and so they knew
about it. and Mr. Amselem said there are three Associations: the 100 building which is theirs.
and the 300 and the 500 buildings and so he is not sure who and what association came. Mr.
Amselem does recall that the City did come to one of their Board meetings because the
President doesn't have the authority to just give away property without consulting with the
Board. The City Planner or City Manager at the time with the plans and conceptual
renderings came to their Board and explained to their membership what the intention was.
The intention was a very good intention, we liked the idea of renovating the entrance but we
.were told that we would have input throughout the process. When he started to see the
17
