BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include scope, size, and cost)
Hardesty & Hanover is providing comprehensive bridge engineering
services and is serving as the Engineer of Record and prime consultant for
the Jupiter Federal Bridge Replacement project.
During the PD&E study, H&H addressed the structural and functional
deficiencies of the existing bascule bridge and made engineering
recommendations on various vertical and horizontal alignments and bridge
replacement alternatives. After extensive public involvement and
coordination with various stakeholders, FDOT elected to have H&H proceed
with the design of twin mid-level double-leaf bascule bridges.
This design process has involved extensive studies,
comprehensive planning, and construction and
environmental measures that will minimize potential impacts
to neighboring businesses, parks, boaters, marinas,
museums, residents, and local traffic. These measures
include constructing temporary intersection improvements,
incorporating Intelligent transportation system (ITS)
throughout the project corridor, and specifying low vibratory
foundation installation measures.
The existing Jupiter Federal Bridge, a divided four-lane low-
level bascule bridge, connects Palm Beach County’s Jupiter
Inlet District and Tequesta communities. Project limits
include SR-5/US-1 Federal Highway from CR-A1A to Beach
Road in Palm Beach County, Florida.
Originally constructed in 1958, the functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridge required replacement. The proposed bridge
configuration has an overall length of 915 feet. The main span over the navigation channel is a 267-foot-long twin double‐leaf trunnion
type bascule span. The approach span unit to the south is 480 foot-long and includes three concrete spans at 152, 160, and 168-feet
with a continuous deck. The approach span unit to the north has a single concrete span at 168 feet. The bridge will have a constant
overall width of 100.5 feet that will accommodate two 30-foot- wide roadways divided by a 19.5-foot wide median. Each roadway will
include two 11-foot travel lanes, an 8-foot outside shoulder with 7-foot buffered bike lane. An 8-foot-wide sidewalk will be provided
outboard each roadway, separated by a traffic railing and bordered by a pedestrian/bicycle railing.
25.
