Jupiter Federal Bridge Replacement
Jupiter, Florida
Client
Florida DOT, D4
James Hughes, PE
954.777.4419

Completion Date:
Estimated Design: 2020
Estimated Construction Start: 2020

Project Value:
$121,000,000

Hardesty & Hanover is serving as the Engineer of Record for this bridge
replacement project. During the preliminary design phase, H&H is addressing the
structural and functional deficiencies of the existing US-1/SR-5 Jupiter Federal
Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway from CR-A1A (Ocean Boulevard) to Beach
Road by studying vertical and horizontal alignment bridge replacement
alternatives.
The existing Jupiter Federal Bridge, originally constructed in 1958 (with a 116-foot
movable span length) and recently deemed by FDOT to be functionally obsolete
and structurally deficient, is a four-lane, divided, low-level bascule bridge that
connects Palm Beach County’s Jupiter Inlet District and Tequesta communities.
The current bridge typical section includes two 11-foot inside travel lanes and two
12-foot outside travel lanes, 2-foot outside shoulders (both sides), bridge rail, and
a 7-foot traffic separator. Dedicated sidewalks and bicycle lanes are not provided,
nor does a barrier exist between vehicles and pedestrians traveling along the
bridge.
The project is in the final stages of the PD&E study which has been extensive due
to the replacement bridge’s potential impact on the neighboring businesses, parks,
boaters, marinas, observation deck, museum, residents and local traffic.
In addition to addressing and correcting bridge deficiencies in our design, H&H will
incorporate intersection improvements and improve traffic functions at both ends
of the approximately 2,960-foot long (0.56 mile) project corridor.
The design will include ADA access ramps to the 8-foot sidewalks and a 7-foot
buffered bike lane will also be provided for additional safety.

F-23
