Project Approach and Understanding
PROJECT UNDERSTANDING
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Pedestrian Bridge with Park Elements (Bridge Park) was the result of a City of Sunny Isles (City)
planning study funded by a matching Miami-Dade County Transportation Planning Organization grant.
The design concept goal is to incorporate accessibility, seating, landscaping, and safety measures
complementing Samson Oceanfront Park to create not a bridge, but a park, within an iconic structure. For
this reason, the new structure will be called “Bridge Park” throughout this narrative.
The Bridge Park crosses Collins Avenue just south of 174th Street providing pedestrian access to Samson
Oceanfront Park. The bridge site is bounded by 174th Street to the northwest, City-owned Samson
Oceanfront Park to the northeast, Winston Tower Condominiums to the west, and the Double Tree Resort
to the southeast. The Study team secured temporary construction, utility, and permanent easements on
the west side of Collins Avenue adjacent to the privacy wall on the Winston Tower property. The skewed
bridge crosses Collins Avenue and touches down at the City-owned Samson Oceanfront Park.
