BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AND RELEVANCE TO THIS CONTRACT (Include scope, size, and cost) <br />Rickenbacker Causeway connects Key Biscayne to downtown <br />Miami, crossing historic Virginia Key and the artificial Hobie Island. <br />The Causeway serves as an important transportation corridor, but <br />also has approximately 2.5-miles of recreational shoreline. Coastal <br />Systems provided field investigations, environmental permitting, <br />coastal and civil engineering design and construction administration <br />services. <br /> <br />Field investigations were completed including hydrographic <br />surveying and beach profiling. Marine resource (seagrass) surveys <br />were conducted, as well as upland native and exotic vegetation <br />mapping. Coastal engineering analyses were completed to <br />determine winds, waves and sediment transport along the project <br />shoreline. Designs were developed for shoreline stabilization <br />including rock revetment, mangrove planter and beach nourishment <br />stabilization. The beach nourishment was designed to avoid impacts <br />to sensitive seagrass beds immediately adjacent to the project <br />shoreline. Sand sources were evaluated based on geotechnical analyses to determine the most economical and compatible beach <br />fill. <br /> <br />Civil engineering services included upland paving and grading, as well as stormwater management improvements. The project <br />combined an extensive upland exotic vegetation removal effort with replanting of native salt-tolerant species. In addition, mangrove <br />planters were designed to enhance the shoreline and protect existing mangrove vegetation. <br /> <br />An off-shore Outfall Box structure was designed to discharge upland storm overflow into the bay, while protecting the shoreline and <br />marine life. This structure, protected by rock revetment, is <br />designed to break down the energy of the storm water and <br />discharge though several weep holes and a submerged open <br />grate. The material is a prefab concrete structure, heavy <br />enough to remain undisturbed and light enough to facilitate <br />installation. The bay water flushes in and out through the stone <br />armor, which is inaccessible to manatees. The open grate <br />(non-corrosive material) flushes water out during high tide and <br />is also used for inspection and maintenance purposes. <br /> <br />Environmental regulatory permits were processed through <br />Miami-Dade Division of Environmental Resources <br />Management (DERM), the Florida Department of <br />Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the U.S. Army Corps of <br />Engineers (Corps). Coastal Systems prepared construction <br />plans and specifications in conjunction with funding <br />constraints and prioritized project elements established by the <br />County. Construction was completed in 2011. <br /> 25.
