be clear of grease and oil before touching any part of oxyacetylene equipment. Keep oxy-gen
tanks well away from equipment that could contaminate them with grease.
14. Never use oxygen to move a pneumatic tool or as a substitute for compressed air. If you do,
the -re could be an explosion and your life will be at risk. Never leave a torch inside a vessel,
tank, barrel or any other type of closed container. A small opening could create conditions for
an explosion.
15. Do not roll cylinders along the ground. Never break an electric are on a cylinder. Do not use
the protective cover to grip the cylinder. Never raise the cylinder using rope lashings. Raise
cylinders that have been vertically fastened to an approved platform. When transporting
cylinders, disconnect regulators.
k.) HANDLING MATERIALS
Manual handlings Use work gloves so as not to injure your skin. Position yourself correctly and test
the weight of the equipment or plant material to be lifted. Ask for help if you feel the weight is too
much for one person to handle, or if the shape of the item is cumbersome.
When you have to pickup something, follow the correct procedures, such as:
1. Always use a back brace, correctly placed and fastened.
2. Take a stance where your legs are no further apart than the width of your shoulders; squat
down next to what you will be picking up; keep your back straight and use your legs for
impulse while lifting — and then if necessary — use the force of your arms. Never twist or turn
your body when you are holding an object; turn by moving your legs. Keep the object as close
to your body as possible. Do not move the object away from your body when getting ready to
put it down.
3. If two or more people are carrying the object, before beginning, decide who will be giving the
orders as to the direction in which the object should be moved. Make sure the path you will be
using is clear, and if anything cannot be moved make sure you remember where it is.
4. Never carry a long object slung over your shoulder. Long objects should be carried by two or
more people.
Mechanized handling:
1. Know the characteristics and capacity of the mechanized equipment you are using and never
exceed these.
2. Know the weight of the object to be transported or ask for help in estimating the weight.
3. Before fastening the load, check to make sure there are no cutting edges that might damage or
cut through lashings.
4. When fastening the object, make sure you do so in places that will not damage it.
5. If the object may have a propensity to spin, use guy wires. Never try to guide it using your
hands.
S.
Lashings, cables or chains used must be the ones certified for this purpose and they must be in
perfect condition. Never use visibly damaged fastenings.
7. Each day, before using hoisting equipment, check the parts and test the movement, hoisting
device and brakes. A good test is to brake with the object when it is still near the ground.
8. Both the equipment operator and assistants will be properly trained in using this type of
equipment.
9. When hoisting an object, the movement must be smooth and uniform. Abrupt movements can
damage lashings or the object.
