LIGHTING
Lighting Design Concept
The Bridge Park will be more than a way to safely traverse Collins Avenue, it will be a landmark, a
place to gather, to relax, to participate, and to celebrate. The lighting on the structure will be as
important as the lighting of the structure. Both will need to blend seamlessly with one another and with
the lighting of the stairs, elevator towers, amphitheater seating, and landscape elements to create a
single, comprehensive design.
The Bridge Park
The lighting of the Bridge Park needs to satisfy both functional and aesthetic goals, providing a safe and
beautiful structure for pedestrians to experience at night. Functional lighting will be integrated into the
landscape and structural elements, illuminating both the walking surfaces and the softscaped areas. Using
a lighting control system, a variety of lighting scenarios will be available to respond to events on or
around the structure, adjust for the time of night, and control the aesthetic lighting on the outside and
underside of the Bridge Park.
In addition to the Bridge Park itself, the experience of viewing and passing under the structure is extremely
important, both aesthetically and functionally. The soft curves of the structural elements will be
highlighted with lines or dots of light to accentuate those organic forms as they move across the highway.
As motorists and pedestrians pass under the structure, they will be enveloped in a softly illuminated
environment, with the vertical and overhead surfaces glowing to create a safe and welcoming space. The
forms of the box girders and piers will be accentuated through the use of light and shadow, using both
white and color-changing light. The overall experience will be one of wonder and delight. Luminaires with
color-changing capabilities can be programmed in simple, elegant, static scenarios, or in dynamic
sequences to celebrate holidays, seasons, and special events. The possibilities are endless and will be
developed in collaboration with the City and stakeholders.
Additional consideration must be given to achieving a successful design in a cost effective and
easily maintainable manner. Vibration, integration into the structure, ease of maintenance and
vandalism all must be considered when selecting luminaires and their locations. We will provide long-life,
robust LED sources to assure minimal maintenance requirements for the City, while at the same time
providing flexible design choices and performance.
There are many ways in which the new 174th Street Bridge Park can be illuminated. Ultimately what is
most important is that the structure expresses the character of the community and that residents and
visitors cherish the Bridge Park as a beautiful addition to the local landscape.
