RESOLUTION NO. 2021 - - <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF SUNNY <br />ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR FLORIDA <br />SENATE BILL 554 WHICH WOULD AMEND SECTION 1003.42, <br />FLORIDA STATUTES, TO REVISE THE REQUIRED HEALTH <br />EDUCATION IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO INCLUDE INFORMATION <br />REGARDING THE DANGERS AND SIGNS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING, <br />AND SPECIFYING THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE HUMAN <br />TRAFFICKING EDUCATION PORTION OF THE COMPREHENSIVE <br />HEALTH EDUCATION CURRICULUM; URGING THE FLORIDA <br />LEGISLATURE AND GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS TO SUPPORT AND <br />APPROVE THE LEGISLATION; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO <br />DISTRIBUTE COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR AN <br />EFFECTIVE DATE. <br />WHEREAS, Senator Perry E. Thurston, Jr. has filed Senate Bill 554 for consideration by <br />the Florida Legislature to revise section 1003.42 of the Florida Statutes to revise the required health <br />education in public schools to include information regarding the dangers and signs of human <br />trafficking; and <br />WHEREAS, the proposed legislation would further specifying the minimum requirements <br />of the human trafficking education portion of the comprehensive health education curriculum; and <br />WHEREAS, the proposed minimum requirements include, but are not limited to, <br />recognition of the signs of human trafficking; awareness of resources, including national, state, <br />and local resources; prevention of the abuse of and addiction to alcohol, nicotine, and drugs; <br />information on the prevalence and nature of human trafficking; strategies to reduce the risk of <br />human trafficking; techniques that may be used in setting healthy boundaries and how to safely <br />seek assistance; and information on how social media and mobile device applications are used for <br />human trafficking; and <br />WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the public and the victims of human trafficking <br />throughout the state of Florida that the Florida Legislature adopt proposed Senate Bill 554. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE <br />CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: <br />Section 1. Recitals. The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and incorporated <br />herein. <br />Section 2. Support for Senate Bill 554. The City Commission hereby expresses support for <br />Senate Bill 554, and urges the Florida Legislature to adopt and Governor Ron DeSantis to support <br />and approve it. <br />Section 3. Directions to the Cit C� The City Clerk is directed to distribute copies of this <br />Resolution to Senator Perry E.
