FLO <br />c, <br />Tp os 5u1+ n <br />City of Sunny Isles Beach <br />18070 Collins Avenue <br />Sunny Isles Beach, Florida 33160 <br />(305) 947-0606 City Hall <br />(305) 949-3113 Fax <br />MEMORANDUM <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners <br />FROM: Mauricio Betancur, CMC, City Clerk <br />DATE: September 7, 2021 <br />RE: Calling a Special Election on January 25, 2022, and a Run -Off, if Necessary, on <br />February 8, 2022 <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />Staff recommends approval of this Resolution. <br />REASONS: <br />Pursuant to the State of Florida's Resign -to -Run Law, Commissioner Larisa Svechin (Seat 1) an( <br />Commissioner Dana Goldman (Seat 3) have tendered their resignations from their respective seats tc <br />run in the upcoming mayoral special election scheduled for November 2, 2021. Both of their <br />resignations are effective November 3, 2021. <br />Pursuant to Section C -2.5(c) of the city's Charter, a special election is required to fill the vacancies, <br />since more than six (6) months remain in both unexpired terms. The Charter states that the special <br />election must be held not sooner than 45 days and no more than 90 days following a vacancy on the <br />commission. This Resolution sets the date of the special election for Tuesday, January 25, 2022. It <br />also provides the required details regarding the conduct of said special election, and provides for a <br />Run -Off, if necessary, on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. <br />Section 26-5 of the city's Code of Ordinance states that the City Commission must designate <br />registered voter to serve with the City Manager and the City Clerk as the city's Canvassing Board. <br />Gloria Taft has served as a member in past elections and is willing and able to serve again. <br />ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: <br />The official candidate qualifying period will commence at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, <br />and conclude at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2021. <br />Item Number: 2.A <br />3 <br />
