Russo, City Manager FROM: Mauricio Betancur, CMC, City Clerk DATE: August 10, 2021 RE: Calling a Special Election on November 2, 2021, and a Run-Off, if Necessary, on November 16, 2021 RECOMMENDATION: Staff is recommending approval of this Resolution. REASON: On Monday, August 3, 2021, Mayor George Scholl submitted his resignation effective September 1, 2021. Pursuant to Section C-2.5(c) of the city's Charter, a special election is required to fill the vacancy, since more than six (6) months remain in the mayor's unexpired term. The Charter states that the special election must be held not sooner than 45 days and no more than 90 days following the vacancy. This Resolution sets the date of the special election for Tuesday, November 2, 2021. It also provides the required details regarding the conduct of said special election, and provides for a Run-Off, if necessary, on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. Section 26-5 of the city's Code of Ordinance states that the City Commission must designate a registered voter to serve with the City Manager and the City Clerk as the city's Canvassing Board. Gloria Taft has served as a member in past elections and is willing and able to serve again. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The official candidate qualifying period will commence at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, and conclude at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2021.
