Russo, City Manager <br /> FROM: Mauricio Betancur, CMC, City Clerk <br /> DATE: August 10, 2021 <br /> RE: Calling a Special Election on November 2, 2021, and a Run-Off, if Necessary, on <br /> November 16, 2021 <br /> RECOMMENDATION: <br /> Staff is recommending approval of this Resolution. <br /> REASON: <br /> On Monday, August 3, 2021, Mayor George Scholl submitted his resignation effective <br /> September 1, 2021. Pursuant to Section C-2.5(c) of the city's Charter, a special election is <br /> required to fill the vacancy, since more than six (6) months remain in the mayor's unexpired <br /> term. The Charter states that the special election must be held not sooner than 45 days and no <br /> more than 90 days following the vacancy. This Resolution sets the date of the special election <br /> for Tuesday, November 2, 2021. It also provides the required details regarding the conduct of <br /> said special election, and provides for a Run-Off, if necessary, on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. <br /> Section 26-5 of the city's Code of Ordinance states that the City Commission must designate a <br /> registered voter to serve with the City Manager and the City Clerk as the city's Canvassing <br /> Board. Gloria Taft has served as a member in past elections and is willing and able to serve <br /> again. <br /> ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: <br /> The official candidate qualifying period will commence at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 31, <br /> 2021, and conclude at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2021. <br />
