STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
ROLE ON THE CITY OF SUNNY ISLES BEACH PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT SPATIAL NEEDS ANALYSIS AND FEASIBILITY STUDY
Derek will serve as structural engineer for the new public safety facility. He will be responsible
for all aspects of structural engineering, including analysis, design, investigation, inspection,
document preparation, cost estimating, and oversight of structural related items.
EXPERIENCE
Mr. Wassink joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2015 with more than 30 years of experience in
structural design, project management and coordination, and business development.
His experience includes municipal, parking structures, and public safety structures. His
municipal and public safety experience is as extensive, as it is varied. From the unexpected
existing conditions seen during the renovation of the 70,000 SF Pompano Beach Public
Safety Complex; to the hurricane hardened, 4-story Collier County Emergency Operations
Center; to the massive, 4- story, 170,000 SF Pembroke Pines Civic Center with its 3500 seat
performing arts auditorium; to the architecturally intricate Coral Springs Municipal Center;
to the schedule-driven Islamorada Public Safety Headquarters and Fire Station. Each public
project has its own challenges and lessons learned.
Derek and ADG have worked on several award-winning municipal projects together in
Florida including the Sunrise Public Safety Complex, Sunrise Fire Station No. 72, Sarasota
Police Headquarters, and Cape Coral Police Headquarters.
