Page 17Request for Qualifications # 22-06-01 Continuing Services for Landscape Architectural Services CCNA
3. Minimum Qualification Requirements b. Government Contracts
City of Miami Beach 20th Street & Sunset Drive Pocket Park
Miami Beach, FL
Miami Beach needed a small park for the community to use while
a nearby park was being redesigned. Ultimately it would serve
the adjacent community and provide a public art component.
Some challenges that arose:
• The City never provided playground equipment.
• The City added an artist and coordination with the artist to
our task.
• The concepts were accepted and then requested for
additional revisions beyond the scope.
• Water table was an issue because the City never provided
the contractor with the geotechnical report.
• Footers for support post were poured in the wrong
locations.
• Initially the design was to provide sheet flow to existing
drainage structures. Per City review we had to retain water
on site for 100 year flood capacity.
To meet the goals of the project, we provided the play
components of the park as the art pieces. We had to redesign
the park to fit within the confines of the erroneously poured
support pole footers. The addition of berms to retain water on
site were created and the play area raised above anticipated
water retention levels.
Some creative thinking of having the playground/play equipment
be the art pieces was quite inventive. Adjusting the design for
the misplaced footer design, and redesigning the site to hold
100 year flood water levels, were logical solutions.
The final product was a great park that the City was proud of.
They saw our creativity and ability to adapt to a changing scope.
They got the best of our work at a minimal cost. The City recently
provided us with a new project, showing that they trust in our
ability to adapt and deliver a quality product in a timely manner.
In the end we were able to recoup a small portion of time we put
into the project but some cost savings were provided through
the “art pieces” play equipment, instead of using traditional
play equipment.
Start / Finish Date: 04/18 - 02/20
