Any necessary amendments must be transmitted within 12 months after notifying
DEO of the determination.
The City notified DEO last December that amendments to the Coastal Management Element were
required to address "peril of flood" legislation. This 2015 legislation requires that Coastal Management
Elements outline principles that must be used to eliminate inappropriate and unsafe development in
coastal areas when opportunities arise. The proposed amendments coordinate with the City's existing
efforts to prepare for the impacts of sea level rise. The ordinance updates the map depicting Category
1 storm surge vulnerability, requires consideration of sea level rise projections in capital
improvements planning and long-term post -disaster recovery, requires adoption of seawall design and
elevation criteria, and encourages consideration of sea level rise in City regulations governing
redevelopment and post -disaster recovery.
Item Number: 9.13
