® WGHT
RIDDER
Alvah H. Chapman, Jr.
Director and
Retired Chairman /CEO
(305) 376 -3870
bcc: Robert E. Chisholm ✓
October 17, 1995
Eugene J. Mackey, III
FAIA, Chair
1-996 Jury of Fellows
The American Institute of Architects
1735 New York Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20006 -5292
Dear Mr. Mackey:
u1'
Knight - Ridder, Inc.
One Herald Plaza
Miami, Florida 33132 -1693
It is my privilege to serve as a reference for Robert E. Chisholm
AIA as his nomination is being considered co be a Fellow of the
American Institute of Architects.
I have known Bob Chisholm for approximately three years. My
closest opportunity to observe Bob Chisholm's work is through his
brilliant and energetic commitment to Community Partnership for
Homeless.
® Bob Chisholm led a team of volunteer architects who designed our
beautiful first Homeless Assistance Center on a pro bono basis.
With his help we were able to get an enormous amount of "in kind"
contributions, including landscaping, design and implementation
worth approximately $200,000, which will provide one of the most
attractive places for homeless in America to begin their return to
a normal life.
Bob is competent, energetic, professional and committed to the
cause of the homeless. He is warmly regarded in the Miami
community as an outstanding architect and a man of strong
character.
In my pre- retirement career as chairman of Knight - Ridder, Inc. with
$2.5 billion in revenues and 25,000 employees, I have had
significant opportunity to observe competent executives at the
professional level. I would place Bob Chisholm in the top one
percent of all of the executives I have known or worked with in my
business career.
It is my honor and privilege to support his nomination to be a
Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
Si ►//
® Alvah H. Cha man, Jr.
AHC /jrm
