• +i City of Fort Myers Downtown Riverfront Basin Johnson Engineering was the prime civil engineering consultant or the City of Fort Myers Downtown Detention Easin.The primary purpose ofthe basin is to treat sor mwater in the City's historic downtown area, before discharging to the impaired Tidal Caloosahatchee River which ultimately flows to the Gulf of Mexico.The water quality treatment program Johnson Engineering designed improves health, safety and welfare of the public in contact with the river by reducing pollutants entering the river: The other benefits include creation of valuable waterfront property for new private investment and development opportunities along the basin's edge, resulting in an expected regional economic impact of up to $67 million and up to 370 permanent jobs to help sustain the local economyThe basin serves as a focal point for public gatherings and events to occur on the public spaces designed around the basin. The pathways surrounding the basin provide public access, giving the public opportunity for connectivity to the waterfront, along with passive recreation and healthy living benefits. Educational components of the project contribute to the community's appreciation for natural resouces and education about the human impact on water quality and strategies to improve the existing conditions and sustain the environmental benefits over time.
