AECOM Section RFO No. 14 -07 -02 15
Flamingo /Lummus Neighborhood
Masterplan and Streetscape
Improvements
Miami Beach. FL
Key Personnel: Gustavo Santana
The Flamingo /Lummus neighborhood encompasses
more than 20 miles of City owned right -of -way in the
heart of South Beach, much of which falls within
the National Register Art Deco Historic District.
The District is one of the most popular tourist
attractions in Florida and one of the most successful
revitalization projects in the world.
The highly walkable Flamingo /Lummus neighborhood
encompasses both a vibrant residential area and the
bulk of the South Beach commercial district. Portions
of the neighborhood fall within three City of Miami
Beach Community Redevelopment Areas.
AECOM was contracted to complete a masterplan
forthe neighborhood that identifi ed and prioritized
key capital improvements, some of which were
based on a series of recommendations developed
in several community design "charrettes" and City
sponsored workshops. Our team was also tasked
with developing an implementation strategy funded
in part by the neighborhood's three CRA districts. A
sample of capital improvement objectives included
the following:
• Improve the relationship between the
neighborhood's namesake Flamingo Park and the
surrounding blocks
• Improve shade tree canopy throughout the
neighborhood
• Slow down vehicular traffi c on residential streets;
• Improve pedestrian walkability through street
corner bump -outs that facilitate shorter street
crossings
• Improve the walking connection to the adjacent
Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay
Oceanfront Neighborhood Urban Design
and Streetscape Improvements
Miami Beach, FL
Key Personnel: Gustavo Santana, Greg Ault
AECOM prepared urban design and streetscape
plans for most of the recently designated National
Register Collins Waterfront Historic District on Miami
Beach. This project area includes many historic MiMO
landmarks, such as the Fontainbleau and Eden Roc
Hotels designed by Morris Lapidus.
The Oceanfront neighborhood project includes
improvements to the City owned public right -of-
ways and several "greenway" locations between the
Atlantic Ocean and Indian Creek. The streetscape
enhancements consist of new planting (such as native
grasses, dune vegetation, specimen palms, and shade
trees); new sidewalks; a bikeway; street furniture; new
curbs; bollards and benches; a pedestrian plaza with
specialty paving, coral stone feature walls, showers,
foot washers, and drinking fountains; and milled and
resurfaced street pavement, as well as pedestrian -
scale lighting.
Traffi c calming and pedestrian safety measures,
such as landscaped "bump- outs" at street corners
and specialty crosswalks at intersections, were also
implemented.
aeX.E .rva i
I-
ea
Keu
'qw cow.
I
co.caca —!x
:
'
craa
A.
AT
sau .w
cumox3aai

I
r'rsES
Sav oc.
EXMTT
NEh.CEEWIM
/
I aXaXEY
5¢EW LX

.3 XFEMU
W CMJEiE
o::.
- - - -AK.
—
The Flamingo /Lummus neighborhood encompasses
more than 20 miles of City owned right -of -way in the
heart of South Beach, much of which falls within
the National Register Art Deco Historic District.
The District is one of the most popular tourist
attractions in Florida and one of the most successful
revitalization projects in the world.
The highly walkable Flamingo /Lummus neighborhood
encompasses both a vibrant residential area and the
bulk of the South Beach commercial district.
