22 <br /> <br />wall, it should be assumed that a dangerous condition m ight ex ist. No employee shall <br />enter any trench below the footing of a foundation or retaining wall unless a supervisor <br />or Competent Person has assured that a safety support system has been insta lled, or <br />the excavation is in stable rock, or a professional engineer has determined that the <br />structure is a sufficient distance from the e xcavation and will not present a danger to <br />those in the excavation . No employee shall enter a trench underneath a foundation or <br />retaining wall until a Competent Per son defined by OSHA regulations determines the <br />trench to be safe. The Competent Person may base the decision on the information <br />received from a professional engineer. <br /> <br />C. Employees who excavate trenches or work in trenches shall not take any <br />measures which un dermine sidewalks, pavement, or appurtenant structures unless <br />support systems are employed to protect all employees form the possibility of collapse. <br />If an employee believes that an e xcavation has jeopardized the structural integrity of a <br />sidewalk, pave ment, or a structure appurtenant to one of these, the employee shall notify <br />the superintendent immediately . <br /> <br /> <br />Protection from Loose Rock or Soil <br /> <br />A. Employees of RIC -MAN in trenches are exposed to injuries from loose rock or <br />soil falling or rolling into the tren ch form the excavation face. Employees shall safeguard <br />themselves from this possibility by taking measures to protect the trench from rock and <br />dirt intrusion. Those measures shall include scaling to remove loose soil and rocks, <br />installing protective barricades at appropriate intervals or at appropriate locations . If an <br />employee believes that alternative or additional safety mea s ures should be taken, the <br />employee shall notify the superintendent immediately. <br /> <br />B. Employees shall be protected from e xcavated materials or equipment falling or <br />rolling into excavation s. All equipment and e xcavated materials shall be kept at least <br />two (2) feet from the edge of the e xcavation. If the two feet provision cannot be complied <br />with, retaining devices shall be utilized in order to prevent excavated materials or <br />equipment from falling back into the trench. If any employee observes that a trench is <br />susceptible to material or equipment falling back in, the employee shall notify the <br />superintendent immediately.
