{Ff City of Sunny Isles Beach <br />18070 Collins Avenue <br />Sunny Isles Beach, Florida 33160 <br />o <br />rFrr aF S�y (305) 947-0606 City Hall <br />(305) 949-3113 Fax <br />MEMORANDUM <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners <br />FROM: Larisa Svechin, Mayor <br />DATE: February 15, 2024 <br />RE: Expressing Support for Florida House Bill 629 Regarding Florida Women'! <br />Historical Marker initiative <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />This Resolution is presented for your consideration. <br />REASONS: <br />In recognition of the March being marked as Women's History Month and because of the significant <br />contributions of Florida women, Representative Basabe has proposed House Bill 629 (HB 629) tc <br />support naming mile markers after Florida women who are world-renowned scientists, writers, <br />educators, pilots, oceanographers, designers, conservationists, and athletes, most of whom have not <br />been honored with a historical marker. <br />present this resolution in support of Representative Basabe's bill. <br />ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: <br />The Florida Historical Marker Program (Program), is instrumental in raising public awareness abou- <br />Florida's rich cultural heritage and enhancing the enjoyment of the state's historic sites for both <br />citizens and tourists, with approximately 1,200 markers placed throughout the state. H B 629 proposes <br />the establishment of The Florida Women's Historical Marker Initiative, aiming to recognize the <br />significant contributions of 100 women, whether living or deceased, to the history of Florida through <br />the placement of historical markers under the Program. This initiative mandates the placement of <br />these markers throughout the state over the next 10 years, ensuring that 10 markers are installed <br />each year, with the first 10 markers to be placed by December 31, 2025, and the final marker by <br />December 31, 2035. The bill also establishes The Women's Historical Marker Selection Committee, <br />which will be responsible for selecting the women to be honored, thereby ensuring a thoughtful and <br />Item Number: 10.M <br />272 <br />
