These funds have been budgeted for for fiscal year 24/25.
Currently the Police Department is using aging electronic control weapons (Tasers) that are several
generations old. The new Taser we are seeking approval to purchase has a substantially improved range
and would allow for the firing of 10 probes rather than 1. These improvements to the weapons are
drastic and have been made with the intention of minimizing fatal encounters. With this purchase the
Police Department would also have unlimited cartridges to include training cartridges, docking stations
to recharge the Tasers, batteries, a software subscription to monitor the device's use, an instructor
course, and a Master Certification for one trainer.
Additionally the Police Department is seeking approval to purchase a Drone Implementation Program
from Axon for $49,999.99 via sole source. Last month approval was received to use local law
enforcement trust funds to purchase the Drone Program from Axon. The purpose of the unit is to use a
drone for various purposes with the primary objective being to enhance the ability of Uniform Patrol.
The drone will be used to patrol the entire beach throughout the day. It will be equipped with a camera
that has the ability to see at night, which will assist officers in enforcing laws and ordinances along the
entire beach. That camera will also have the ability to record and stream the video feed to external
sources like the Hiperwall in the Communications Center. The drone will be equipped with red and blue
Item Number: 9.13
59
