F L0
OF 3'.➢H
TO:
FROM:
DATE:
RE:
City of Sunny Isles Beach
18070 Collins Avenue
Sunny Isles Beach, Florida 33160
(305) 947-0606 City Hall
(305) 949-3113 Fax
MEMORANDUM
Honorable Mayor and City Commissioners
Jerry Joseph, Commissioner
March 20, 2025
Request for Florida Department of Transportation Consideration of Flashing
Crosswalk Installation at 196th Street and Collins Avenue
RECOMMENDATION:
Resolution is presented for your consideration.
REASONS:
In April 2023, the City Commission passed Resolution Number 2023-3499, expressing strong support for
a proposed traffic light and crosswalk at 196th Street and Collins Avenue. The resolution was submitted
to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for consideration.
FDOT conducted a study to evaluate the feasibility of the request, and in October 2024, the results
indicated that current traffic and pedestrian counts do not justify a traffic signal or crosswalk at this
location. In fact, the study showed a decline in foot traffic compared to previous assessments.
However, residents of Golden Gates are now advocating for a flashing crosswalk at 196th Street and
Collins Avenue to enhance pedestrian safety. This area serves families with children, seniors, and other
community members who rely on safe crossings. In response, the City is requesting that FDOT
reevaluate this location fora flashing crosswalkto improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.
ATTACHMENTS:
Resolution
Item Number: 9.K
175
