Summary Minutes:Regular City Commission Meeting November 20.2014 City of Sunny Isles Beach.Florida
in effect since the City was created, hotels have been permitted as part of the zoning on the
west side, people have a right to build on their property as long as they are not asking for
variances. It is incumbent upon the Commission to give the weight of evidence in favor of
that project and he believes the City does need additional hotels, the only commerce this City
has is hotels. If Ibis Romero were here tonight representing the Tourist and the Marketing
Council of Sunny Isles Beach she would be in favor of this because it brings more tourism to
Sunny Isles Beach which brings more jobs, it brines more opportunity for people to spend
money in our City and make it the type of City that we have filtered into. He knows that many
of the residents are against this project but remember there was a time when you, due to a
building here that had been recently built and your predecessors also said we don't want to see
additional buildings here, we want to just leave it the way it was. If we would have adopted
that philosophy, Sunny Isles Beach today would still be two-story motels along Collins
Avenue and we wouldn't have the wonderful City that we have here today. Progress
unfortunately to some people creates a situation that it is not like it used to be but that doesn't
mean that the way it used to be was a better way. We have to recognize for a community to be
successful it has to be adaptable. Again if the people of this City wish to change things then
there is a type of forum to do that but what is before us today is based on regulations that are
in effect for the City today. It would be totally unfair to put the City in a case where it would
be sued by the developer because we have refused to give him permission to build what he has
as of right to be able to build. With that he will be in favor of this project.
Vice Mayor Aelion said he did an experiment himself, for two consecutive days during. the
week he sat with his car outside the proposed site on Atlantic Boulevard, and he counted at
least 25 to 30 children walking home from school. Now imagine a situation like the Newport
scenario, with traffic coming in and out, with trucks backing up,etc. and the children walking
home. He is very uncomfortable with it. Mayor Edelcup said you have children walking
behind even' one of Raanan Katz shopping centers that have more traffic going in and out
even' day than what you would have going into this hotel.
City Attorney Ottinot said with the added condition of the special event permit and Police
service if there is an event at the hotel. Mayor Edelcup said he would also like the Marriott to
consider becoming a member of the Sunny Isles Beach Resort and Tourism Association, and
Mr. Finvarb agreed.
Commissioner Scholl moved and Commissioner Levin seconded a motion for approval,
subject to staff conditions. Resolution No. 14-Z-148 was adopted by a roll call vote of 3-
2 (Vice Mayor Aelion and Commissioner Gatto against) in favor.
Vote: Commissioner Gatto no
Commissioner Levin yes
Commissioner Scholl yes
Vice Mayor Aelion no
Mayor Edelcup yes
[City Clerk's Note: The Commission took c1 five-minute break after this item. After the
Commission reconvened, related Item 10J was heard.]
12
