Summary Minutes:Regular City Commission Meeting December 18,2014 City of Sunny Isles Beach,Florida
it from the agencies that do that and that is where Vice Mayor Aelion is coming from and he
is absolutely right. But we could afford to possibly put some mitigation in that helps slow
down the erosion. Mitigation, and we don't have expertise in this area. He and the City
Manager have talked about hiring an oceanic or geological engineer who understands this.
For instance,if you put an undersea rock jetty 300 or 400 feet off shore, would that undersea
rock jetty create any kind of a barrier that would break that down? The other piece might be
can we put a rock jetty like at Haulover under the Pier, and at least about half or two-thirds
down the City that mitigates the sand shifting all the way down into Haulover. Because that
is really what happens Haulover doesn't have the problem because every time that sand
wants to shift to the south and Haulover has always been beaches. So the point is that we
have a three-prong attack which might be an undersea technique,a jetty mitigation technique,
and also going after our State and Federal Agencies that could undertake the beach
renourishment projects. We all understand what is out there, especially this time of year
when a storm gets exacerbating because behind folks buildings a lot of times that beach
erodes very quickly, it comes back but it never comes back to the same place it was when it
started eroding. He thinks the City Manager has a clear indication of what we are looking for
and he would hope that he would undertake looking into some of those issues.
13. CITIZENS' FORUM: REQUESTS, PETITIONS & OTHER COMMUNICATIONS
None
14. ADJOURNMENT
Commissioner Levin moved and Vice Mayor Aelion seconded a motion to adjourn the
meeting, and Mayor Scholl adjourned it at 9:30 p.••.
Respectfully submitted by: Appro ed by t City Commission on Jan. 15, 2015
4111bb■e.
Jane A. Hines, MMC, City Clerk George • . Scholl, Mayor
26
