Nick Bragaia, PE, ENV SP
Waterfront Engineer/Project Manager
Nick Bragaia is a waterfront engineer/project manager whose professional experience
involves work on a wide variety of interdisciplinary engineering projects. Nick’s background
is rooted in coastal engineering with an emphasis on metocean analysis, port/waterfront
infrastructure, and flood resiliency projects. He is experienced in the planning and design
of coastal protection structures (revetments, groins, etc.) as well as nature-based solutions.
His experience spans leading the feasibility studies and front-end planning through detailed
design plans, and stakeholder engagement activities.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Asharoken Shoreline Protection, Village of Asharoken, Asharoken, NY. The Village
of Asharoken, located on Long Island Sound, has a stretch of shoreline fronted by an aging
seawall and deteriorated revetment. There has been significant beach erosion and loss of
material causing wave processes to affect the upland areas. Provided coastal engineering
services to design a system of three (3) rock groins along with beach fill fronting this stretch
of shoreline. This nearshore system was integrated into a new seawall design that was also
delivered by GEI to the Village.
PREVIOUS PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Miami-Dade County Coastal Engineering Services, Miami-Dade County
RER-DERM, Miami, FL. The Miami-Dade County Division of Environmental Resources
Management (DERM), Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER) required
services to provide coastal modelling, planning, permitting, and design services to help the
County actively manage its shorelines and coastal resources. Managed a team of coastal
professionals that assist the County with the management of approximately 13-miles of
sandy shoreline encompassing 2 tidally influenced navigation inlets. Coastal engineering
services provided included numerical modelling, beach nourishment design/permitting,
and inlet sediment management studies. Led the coastal team and successfully obtained a
unified truck haul beach nourishment permit for the entirety of the 13-mile Project area. This
enabled the County to efficiently execute beach nourishment Projects over the entirety of the
managed shoreline. Managed the design of an offshore reef breakwater system to alleviate an
erosional hotspot area susceptible to coastal storm risks. The design of this reef breakwater
system employed a combination of numerical and physical wave tank modelling to optimize
the design.
Town of Palm Beach Mid-Town Seawall Replacement, Town of Palm Beach
Public Works, Palm Beach, FL. Supported the Town’s Project that is working on the
Design, Permitting and Bid Phase Services associated with replacement of an aging section
of existing seawall fronting the Atlantic Ocean to provide storm protection for Ocean
Boulevard, which serves as the hurricane evacuation route for this segment of the Island.
The Project comprises approximately 2,700 linear feet of seawall protecting Ocean Boulevard
along a very popular public beach in the heart of the Town. Provided coastal engineering
services to understand the design environmental conditions at the site. Conducted a wave
scour assessment to provide a design scour depth that the new sheet pile seawall must
accommodate. Additionally, estimated the extreme water levels at the site to inform the
top of wall elevation. Led the subsurface field evaluations tasked with the identification
of existing toe protection features and rock groin tie-in locations to minimize conflict risks
during the construction of the new seawall.
Matheson Hammock Seawall Replacement, Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation, and
Open Spaces (PROS), Miami, FL. There was a need for the replacement of 675 linear feet
of sea wall on the upland side of a marina to mitigate sea level rise and sunny day flooding
events that limit public enjoyment of this iconic Miami park. This is step one by the client
to ensure protection of the 630-acre Matheson Hammock Park located along the western
shoreline of Biscayne Bay. The historic park includes a 243-slip marina, restaurant, large
wading lagoon and beach, mangrove trails, and numerous historic buildings and structures
constructed of Miami’s oolitic limestone. Currently, the project is in the pre-construction
phase, with permits submitted to the respective agencies for review and approval.
