Corradino was an integral part of the team that led the development of the City’s 2016 Transportation Master Plan. The City of Sunny Isles Beach has established a long-term vision centered on preserving residents’ quality of life while addressing the mobility constraints of a highly urbanized, linear barrier-island community. State Road A1A/Collins Avenue serves as the City’s primary north-south corridor and has limited opportunities for roadway expansion. The City’s transportation strategy emphasizes multimodal mobility, operational improvements, resiliency, and context-sensitive infrastructure rather than traditional roadway widening. This direction is reflected in the City’s Transportation Master Plan, Comprehensive Plan, and ongoing transportation initiatives. Corradino understands the City’s principal transportation priorities include the following: 1. Reducing Congestion along State Road A1A/Collins Avenue State Road A1A/Collins Avenue is the City’s transportation spine and experiences recurring congestion from resident, visitor, regional, and special-event traffic. Recognizing the physical limitations of widening the corridor, the City has prioritized: • Traffic operations improvements • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) • Signal timing optimization • Improved intersection operations • Transportation Demand Management (TDM) • Alternative travel modes that reduce vehicle trips These operational improvements are viewed as more sustainable solutions than increasing roadway capacity. 2. Expanding Multimodal Transportation Options A major strategic priority is creating a transportation network that provides viable alternatives to automobile traffic. The City continues to focus on: • Enhanced pedestrian connectivity • Safe bicycle facilities • Community shuttle improvements • Better regional transit connections • Complete Streets implementation • Improved first-mile/last-mile access The Comprehensive Plan specifically promotes providing the “full range of mobility options,” including walking, bicycling, transit, water transportation, and automobiles through an integrated multimodal system. 3. Improving Internal Circulation Because many local trips currently rely on Collins Avenue, the City has emphasized improving internal circulation among neighborhoods, parks, civic facilities, and commercial destinations. The key objectives include: • Reducing short automobile trips • Improving east-west connectivity • Enhancing neighborhood access • Creating alternative local travel routes where feasible • Better linking parking with transit services These improvements help reduce dependency on the regional roadway network while supporting local mobility. 4. Pedestrian Safety and Complete Streets As one of the most densely populated municipalities in Florida, Sunny Isles Beach places significant emphasis on pedestrian safety. Transportation investments increasingly incorporate: • ADA accessibility • Wider sidewalks • Improved crossings • Streetscape enhancements • Lighting • Traffic calming
