<br />| ITS DESIGN
<br />To complete an ITS design project, Corradino will provide experienced staff who will use the appropriate design manuals and guidelines, including AASHTO, MUTCD, the Traffic Signal Timing Manual (FHWA), FDOT Design Standards, and other local design criteria.
<br />Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Traffic Engineering Study/Timings Approach The Corradino Team understands that ITS design projects have fast-paced design schedules due to the nature of the service. As such, we have strategically assembled a team of highly qualified and experienced professionals at all levels to provide the availability and redundancy necessary to deliver multiple concurrent tasks with superior quality and on schedule. The Corradino Team has extensive knowledge and
<br />experience in implementing traffic engineering strategies on arterials, including conventional traffic operations and control technologies, as well as state-of-the-art technologies such as adaptive signal control, Transit Signal Priority, and connected/autonomous vehicles (CAV). Our staff’s experience with the most current practices for signal retiming and the latest generation 2070 ATC controllers, as well as experience with diverse ATMS functionalities, detection systems, cameras, and other peripherals, has allowed us to develop plans with minimal involvement from the Broward County staff and has greatly reduced the review time and approval from the maintaining agencies. We have also developed optimal signal displays that can safely support the County’s pedestrian and bicycle mobility needs while meeting MUTCD and ADA requirements. As part of the review and development of the Traffic Signal Operations Plans (SOP)/Signalization plans, we followed the following general approach. Our staff has developed this approach, which has been used at hundreds of intersections with varying traffic and geometric characteristics.
<br />The key aspect of SOP development involves:
<br />• How will the left-turn movements be operated? Is protected phasing needed? • Is protected-only required based on the number of left turn lanes or geometric conditions? • Can the desired operation be achieved safely and efficiently with a single controller, or will two controllers be required? • In addition, we consider the controller cabinet location to minimize the likelihood of being hit by an errant vehicle, ease of troubleshooting, and ability to monitor the operation by police officers and technicians.
<br />Corradino has worked on recent projects with Broward County, where adaptive traffic signal control (ATSC) technology has been implemented along major corridors such as University Dr., Hallandale Beach Blvd., SR 7/US 441, Broward Blvd., Sunrise Blvd., US-1, etc. Corradino staff have worked on a number of these corridors. As part of the Mobility Advancement Program (MAP), this upgrade will replace the old traffic signal control equipment with the advanced traffic signal control technologies, including hardware and software. In addition, this upgrade can take up to several years and will significantly impact the County’s regular traffic improvement projects. The ATSC improvement is a highly technical process that involves a multi-pronged delivery approach encompassing the deployment of traffic signal control technology, design, installation, integration, system testing, and coordination with FDOT and local stakeholders. Over the past few years, our Team has assisted the Miami-Dade County Traffic Signal and Signs (TSS) Division in successfully delivering the County’s Traffic Signal System Modernization project and in implementing ATSC along 12 identified congestion corridors. The project enhanced the driving experience of commuters by improving throughput and reducing stops, delays, and emissions within the County. The Corradino Team’s experience and expertise in ITS Analysis and Design will be helpful to the City. We will engage additional subject-matter experts on this project to ensure that the ATSC component of every traffic engineering project is delivered on time and within budget, and that it meets the design, installation, testing, and operational requirements defined by Miami-Dade County DTPW Standards.
<br />ITS Analysis, Design & Communication
<br />For the ITS design, we will first coordinate with the City Project Manager to gain a thorough understanding of the traffic engineering and the ITS project’s goals and objectives. Then we will develop the system engineering documents, including PSEMP, ConOps, and RTVM, to ensure they fully address the requirements for design, construction, operations, and maintenance, as well as
