The City, along with their local Police Department, expressed an interest in the installation of automated Speed Detection Systems (SDS) to enforce speed limits in school zones within 30 minutes before a regularly scheduled breakfast program or school session during the entirety of a regularly scheduled school session, and within 30 minutes after the end of a regularly scheduled school session, as per the Florida Senate House Bill CS/CS/HB 657 – Enforcement of School Zone Limits which became effective 7/01/2023. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is developing standard specifications for the SDS installation. Speed Detection Systems (SDS), as defined by F.S 316.003, is a portable or fixed automated system used to detect a motor vehicle’s speed using radar or LiDAR and to capture a photograph or video of the rear of a motor vehicle that exceeds the speed limit enforced at the time of the violation.
Based on the collected traffic volume, 85th percentile speed criteria evaluated in the report, and the crash history reviewed, the following school zones were determined to be potentially good candidates for the installation of SDS:
•Zone 1. Alton Road •Zone 8. Dade Boulevard •Zone 9. Prairie Avenue •Zone 10. W 41st Street** (Additional considerations should be reviewed as this is a state roadway facility) •Zone 14. Meridian Avenue •Zone 17.
