78 City of Sunny Isles Beach New Facility Qualifications for Architectural Design Services
A new Community Center and Aquatic
Park was designed for The Town
of Surfside, Florida that totals ap-
proximately 30,000 square feet. The
project, located on the ocean in this
midcentury modern inspired com-
munity includes wellness, Community
Spaces, Library, Art Classrooms and
Administration Spaces for the Town’s
Park and Recreation Department.
This new facility replaces a 1960’s era
building that had become functionally
obsolete both in programmatic layout
and adherence to current building
codes.
The new community center floats a
raised second and third floor over the
smaller ground floor uses to allow
views through to the ocean beyond; the
architectural palette of smooth stucco,
geometric sun-screening devices and
glass mosaic tile becomes a contem-
porary reinterpretation of the 1950’s
architectural style that is seen in both
the commercial and residential archi-
tecture of the community.
*Personal experience of Lawrence Kline,
Project Designer while at AECOM (Spillis
Candela & Partners)
CLIENT
Town of Surfside
9293 Harding Avenue
Surfside, Florida
t. 305.861.4863
OCATION Surfside, Florida
COMPLETION DATE Phase I: July 2011
CONSTRUCTION COST $6 million
SIZE 6,000 square feet - Phase I
TOWN OF SURFSIDESURFSIDE COMMUNITY CENTER
