ACTION: The City Clerk read the title and explained that the City Charter requires that <br /> the City Clerk schedule the election not later than August 151. He also noted that the <br /> City would save approximately$7,000 if the Special Election were held in the fall at the <br /> same time that Miami-Dade County will be conducting countywide elections (either <br /> September 1, or October 1, 1998). He reported that an ordinance would be presented <br /> to the Commission during the summer to formally call the Special Election. Mayor <br /> Samson mentioned a possibility of having a mailed ballot. <br /> Commissioner Morrow moved, and Commissioner Kauffman seconded a motion to <br /> have the Special Election occur on October 1, 1998, which was approved by a roll call <br /> vote of 5-0 in favor. <br /> Vote: Commissioner Iglesias Les <br /> Commissioner Kauffman yes <br /> Commissioner Morrow y <br /> Vice-Mayor Turetsky yes <br /> Mayor Samson <br /> C. As a community service, Commissioner Kauffman reported that she had arranged for <br /> free bus rides for Sunny Isles Beach senior citizens to and from the Michael-Ann <br /> Russell Jewish Community Center, providing there are a minimum of five people. The <br /> service is available twice a day. <br /> 12. REQUESTS, PETITIONS & OTHER COMMUNICATIONS <br /> A. During discussion of Agenda item 6-B, Ellen Wynne noted there was no traffic iight <br /> at 186th Street and Collins Avenue, which forces most of the local traffic to rely on 185'" <br /> Street. <br /> B. During discussion of Agenda item 7-B,two members of the public requested a change <br /> form the date of the April 9, 1998 for the next City Commission meeting, and City Hall <br /> Grand Opening, due to it also being Holy Thursday. It was noted that there would be <br /> inadequate time to advertise notice of the public hearings at a sooner date; invitations <br /> had already been mailed, and contracts had already been signed for the Grand <br /> Opening. Mayor Samson expressed regret for the staff oversight in scheduling. <br /> C. Mayor Samson reported that we are negotiating with Aventura and North Miami Beach <br /> to have a circuit bus service running between our communities. <br /> D. Mayor Samson said the public is invited to the Grand Opening of City Hall on <br /> Thursday, April 9'h, 1998 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. <br /> E. Mayor Samson announced that we are negotiating for the possible lease of space for <br /> the City's Police Department next to City Hall. <br /> 13.
