MDCPS procured Emerald Construction thru a Hard Bid Selection method to perform the shell construction addition of 12 new classroom additions on top of an existing 4 floor parking garage while maintaining the garage and existing school occupied/operational during construction. The project time frame was seven months from start to completion with 60 days to Final Completion. The schedule required coordination of 10- 12 hour shifts to avoid conflicts with testing sessions that were on-going through-out the school year. The building was a composite structure with an exterior combined of steel framing, in-fill masonry, and composite floor slab in order to minimize weight. Additional pile foun-dations had to be installed at the base of the garage which involved the use of low-over- head pile rig. This rig could drill a minimum of 45’ with 13’ of overhead clearance, also a 16” shear wall was constructed through the existing parking garage to add lateral support of the new building addition. Lastly, a new 5 story stair structure with bridge connec-tions to the new addition and the existing facility had to be constructed in order to facili-tate the future student traffic routes and provide proper egress means.
