This project is a $23 million, 105,000 sf school that serves
approximately 900 students between pre-kindergarten and
8th grade. The three-story building features steel frame and
masonry construction.
In total, there are 24 standard academic classrooms, two
multipurpose rooms, one computer lab, one science lab,
music and art classroom, a gymnasium and stage, lockers,
kitchen and dining facilities, and about seven general offices.
This school is designed for community use on the evenings
and weekends with independent access to the gym, dining
room and other specialty spaces. Exterior amenities include
a parking lot, nature walk and garden, a playlot, green and
reflective roof, and a play space with a paved tricycle path.
The school is equipped with a state-of-the art Computer
Network and a fully commissioned building automation
system which monitors and maintains all HVAC settings. The
heating and air conditioning is provided by selfcontained
systems. Security and access control is a very important aspect
of this project. A security alarm system with a surveillance
camera was installed which links video footage to the Chicago
Public School’s security office. Exterior security lighting
surrounds the building and the school is fully sprinkled with a
fire alarm system.
The building’s design includes a 50% green roof and received
LEED Gold certification under the U.S. Green Building
Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) standard.
NAME AND LOCATION OF PROJECT
Calmeca Academy of Fine Arts & Dual Language - Chicago Public Schools -
Chicago, IL
SIZE OF PROJECT105,000 sf
CLIENTS CONTACT INFORMATION
Chicago Public SchoolsKevin Taylor
773-553-3220kjtaylor@cps.k12.il.us
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This project consisted of renovatingapproximately 2,000 sf of existing
school and classroom space into a new health clinic.
CONTRACT TERM
3/24/2009 - 6/24/2010
FIRM’S RESPONSIBILITY ON THE PROJECT
New Construction
RESULTS OF PROJECTComplete & Occupied
COST OF PROJECT
$22,699,006
F.
