7. Report and Update on the "Pelican Community Park".
Action: City Historian Schulman reported on the Pelican Community; Park and presented
photographs of the Pelican from the Driftwood Motel. The historic Pelican will be restored in its
original colors along with a plaque and placed on the outside front wall of the Community Center
facing the school.
8. Old Business.
None
9. New Business:
• Discussion and Report of the Lagoon Restaurant Memorabilia.
Action: City Historian Schulman reported on the Lagoon Restaurant Memorabilia, and noted that
they will go into the restaurant and select memorabilia for the City. Commissioner Scholl noted
that it will be mostly pictures, and Mayor Edelcup said it dates back to Al Capone's era in the
1930's.
• Cassey Gabor said the location for placement of artifacts is very important, and she noted that
the horses and carriage can't be seen from where they are now in the Sehator Gwen Margolis
Park, and suggested that they be moved to a corner so all sides can be seen, and Mayor Edelcup
agreed. Vice Mayor Thaler noted that it will be moved once the Dog Park goes in, and a fence
will be needed. Mayor Edelcup suggested that they come to the January 17, 2008 City
Commission meeting as the Dog Park is on the agenda and will be discussed. Commissioner
Scholl asked about the Butterfly Sculpture noting that it is considered an Art in Public Places
piece.
• Cassey Gabor asked about the Rascal House, and City Historian Schulman said that there is a
letter from Isaac Starkman, owner of the Rascal House,in the Second Annual Report, stating that
once they close, they will provide to the City any historic memorabilia'that they may want to
preserve.
• Cassey Gabor asked about the Atlantic Isles Lagoon Bridge Lighting, and Mayor Edelcup said
at the next meeting we may need a similar Resolution as we did for the Pier, for the Atlantic Isles
Lagoon Bridge as it cannot be repaired and must be replaced, but it may be replicated.
• Cassey Gabor said there is no public awareness, and Commissioner Brezin noted that the book
"From Sandbar to Sophistication, the Story of Sunny Isles Beach"was published and it is full of
pictures detailing the City's history, and City Historian Schulman noted that is very much public
awareness. Commissioner Goodman said that we should advertise Sunny Isles Beach the way it
is now. Cassey Gabor said that we need to put on the intemet the City's art, culture, beauty and
history. Mayor Edelcup said in a compromise, we can ask City Historian Schulman to talk to
Seth Bramson and maybe we can televise or make a movie about the book, plates from the book
etc., and have Mr. Bramson read through it. Commissioner Scholl said we can catalogue the
memorabilia and link it to the City's website and then everyone can see it, we should get
everything that we can get, and take digital photos of City Historian Schulman's books of
articles, etc.
Summary Minutes 2008-0115 HPB Mtg Page 3 of 4
