SAMSON OCEANFRONT PARK
CITY OF SUNNY ISLES
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
UNIT MASONRY 040500-11
I. At all locations where window frames or hollow metal door frames butt split-faced masonry block,
Contractor shall provide proper transition to smooth faced concrete block for proper joint
conditions.

3.05 MORTAR BEDDING AND JOINTING:

A. Lay solid masonry units with completely filled bed and head joints; butter ends with sufficient
mortar to fill head joints and shove into place. Do not slush head joints.

B. Lay hollow concrete masonry units with full mortar coverage on horizontal and vertical face
shells. Bed webs in mortar in starting course on footings and in all courses of piers, columns, and
pilasters, and where adjacent to cells or cavities to be reinforced and/or to be filled with grout. For
starting course on footings where cells are not grouted, spread out full mortar bed including areas
under cells.

C. Maintain joint widths shown, except for minor variations required to maintain bond alignment. Do
not exceed joint thickness indicated by more than plus or minus 1/8 inch. If not shown, lay walls
with 3/8 inch (9.6 mm) joints.

D. Cut joints flush for masonry walls to be concealed or to be covered by other materials, unless
otherwise indicated.

E. Tool exposed joints as follows:
1. Concrete Block: Tool slightly concave using a jointer larger than the joint thickness, unless
otherwise directed by Architect. Consult Architect prior to starting work.

F. Remove masonry units disturbed after laying; clean and reset in fresh mortar. Do not pound
corners or jambs to shift adjacent stretcher units, which have been set in position. If adjustments
are required, remove units, clean off mortar and reset in fresh mortar.

3.06

CAVITIES/AIR SPACES:
A. Keep cavities/air spaces clean of mortar droppings and other materials during construction. Strike
joints facing cavities/air spaces flush. Place prefabricated cavity protection devices at base of open
cavities to prevent clogging of weepholes. Follow manufacturer's directions for installation of
cavity protection material.

B. Tie exterior wythe to backup with individual metal ties. Stagger alternate courses.

C. Cavities and air spaces found not to be clean by the Architect shall be cleaned by the Contractor at
no additional cost to the Contract, even if masonry is required to be removed and then replaced.

3.07 HORIZONTAL JOINT REINFORCEMENT:

A. General: Provide continuous horizontal joint reinforcement as indicated. Install longitudinal side
rods in mortar for their entire length. Longitudinal side rods shall engage outer face shell of unit
by at least ~ inch. Wire wall ties shall be embedded at least 1- ½ inches into the mortar bed of
solid masonry units or solid grouted hollow units. Lap reinforcing a minimum of 6 inches.

B. Cut or interrupt joint reinforcement at control and expansion joints, unless otherwise indicated.

C. Provide continuity at corners and wall intersections by use of prefabricated "L " and "T" section.
Cut and bend reinforcement units as directed by manufacturer for continuity at returns, offsets,
column fireproofing, pipe enclosures, and other special conditions.
