Architecture' 5-2
Miami Dade
College
1 March 15, 2011
Larry Levis, AIA
Miami Architecture Director
Atkins
2001 NW 107th Avenue
Miami, FL 33172
Larry,
Now that the dust has settled, I wanted to let you know that the response from the end-users
of the new Culinary Institute of Miami building has been overwhelmingly positive. The students
love the state-of-the-art cooking labs as well as the break-out spaces and locker changing room.
The high-end finishes and look belie the fact that it is the only such program offered by a public
institution at an affordable cost. Pedestrians at street level love people-watching at the café
seating and the elegant penthouse restaurant provides the perfect setting for the planned 4-
star dining service. By far the most excitement is being generated by the Demonstration Wine
and Food Studio. A perfect blend of high-tech and old-world finishes is sure to attract celebrity
chefs from around the world.
1 If they only knew how difficult it was to manage the design of such a complex vertical
laboratory on such a constrained site, sandwiched between existing buildings and the
Metrorail, they would appreciate it even more. The seamless technology and the labyrinth of
' shafts, ducts and pipes compressed into a small footprint make the building a true marvel.
Overall, we're very happy with the finished building. It embodies the spirit of the Wolfson
campus and what the Institute is destined to become- a world class facility. You and your team
were a pleasure to work with and you delivered a gem of a building that you should be very
proud of!
Sincerely,
Carlos Dougnac
AVP Design 8 Construction, College Architect
LEED AP
cdougnac@mdc.edu
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
11011 SW 104,-STREET.L-105
MIAMI.FLORIDA 33176-3393
305-237-0608 OFFICE 7 786-229-2061 CELL
1
0006.027944.0512 Atkins I City of Sunny Isles Beach, RFQ No. 12-04-02
