The Village of Palmetto Bay was awarded a Florida Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Grant to conduct a tree inventory for its municipal properties and roadway rights of way. E Sciences submitted the willing proposal for the project. For trees located within Village right of way, E Sciences staff collected location information using sub-meter Global Positioning System receivers. Additional information collected for each tree includes the species (common and scientific name), diameter at breast height, a condition rating and a recommendation for maintenance. The inventory has highlighted the fact that the Village has a very diverse tree canopy with a large variety of shade, ornamental, fruit and spice trees, as well as a large number of different palm species.
