Solera, Community Development Director

DATE:

6/18/2009

RE:

Sea Turtles Protection Regulations on the Beach Area Adjacent to
Existing and Proposed Developments

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the City Commission approve the attached Ordinance
creating guidelines for lights along the beach area, related to the protection of
turtles and turtles nesting.

REASONS:

The Community Development Department performed a study of various
municipalities and counties in the East and West Coast of Florida. The City of
Sunny Isles Beach does not have an ordinance that regulates the installation of
lights along properties located in the East side of Collins and adjacent to the
beach. As the City of Sunny Isles Beach area is a location used by turtles during
the month that expand from April 1 through October 31 of each year for nesting
purposes, this ordinance will provide additional protection for this type of
endangered animal species. Below is a list of the locations that were visited by
the Department during the survey that was conducted prior to the creation of this
ordinance, and the condition that was found during the visit:

Location Name Address Condition Found Steps Necessary to
correct condition
Tropicana 15645 Collins Security Lights on Relocation of the lights
Condominium A venue the edge of the to shine towards the
property ground (Corrected)
Sayan 1627 5 Collins Fluorescent Lights Re-direct the lights
Condominium Avenue shining onto the towards the inside of
beach the building

nni-~

erA
t. -I Q-(\/1

http://sibagenda.si bfl.net/agenda/Preview .aspx?l temID=26&MeetingID=

Agenda Item
