Sunny Isles Beach Comprehensive Plan April13,2000 Page 2 of5 In February 2000, the City Commission engaged the firm of Luft Consulting to assist in the final preparation of the Comprehensive Plan. The document before you this evening is the result of this effort. Luft Consulting was assisted by the following firms: the Chesapeake Group and North Meridian. The completion of this effort was made possible by the continued support of the members Citizen Planning Advisory Committee, who met with staff and the consultants on a weekly basis so that this plan could be produced in an expedited fashion. It also should be noted that the preparation of the Comprehensive Plan was aided through financial assistance received from the State of Florida under the Local Government Comprehensive Planning Assistance Program, authorized by Chapter 87-98, Florida Statutes, and administered by the Department of Community Affairs. Based on the purpose and intent for Comprehensive Plans as stated in the Florida Statute and explained above, Luft Consulting prepared the document that is before you this evening. The following information provides a summary of the major features contained within this plan. COMPREHENSIVE PLAN SUMMARY The City of Sunny Isles Beach was incorporated in 1997 as the fulfillment of the vision, efforts and determination of a community of individuals who sought to control their own destiny as a city and shape a higher quality of life for themselves and future generations. This comprehensive plan is an expression of that desire and vision. It was 80 years ago that the South Florida land boom of the 1920's forged the creation of a metropolitan area out of a sub-tropical wilderness. The beauty of the Atlantic beachfront, the subtropical climate and the region's strategic position as a maritime and aviation crossroads were the catalysts for creating within one lifetime the dynamic international community that Sunny Isles is a part of today. But it has been this remarkable pace of growth and change and the complexity of sustaining a vital and high quality environment within the excesses of a major urban center that has underscored the need for a sound, comprehensive, long range community plan. The City of Sunny Isles Beach Comprehensive plan is: Long Range in scope: It is designed to establish clear and predictable outcomes for ways land will be used and developed by providing the policy basis for the implementing codes and regulations administered by the City.
