I
I~,,,
Cf:

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Transportation Element

The Transportation Element calls for maintaining an integrated multimodal
transportation system with an emphasis on public transportation and greenways. The
City of Sunny Isles Beach has implemented its own public transportation system in the
form of a free community shuttle that runs daily. The Miami-Dade Transit Authority
operates five Metrobus transit routes which connect the city to regional activities and to
the Metrorail and Metromover.

Furthermore, the City is currently planning to provide vehicular as well as pedestrian
access and connections along North Bay Road. This would add an alternate parallel
facility to Collins Avenue and a substantial pedestrian element to the Greenway,
Pedestrian, and Bicycle Objective in the Transportation component of the
Comprehensive Plan.

The City has adopted a level-of-service liE +20" as the standard acceptable LOS. Since
all of Sunny Isles Beach is located with a concurrency excepted area, the LOS adopted
is appropriate for its roadways.

Over the last year or so, the City has made significant progress in providing both
aesthetic improvements to the Collins Avenue corridor and better pedestrian throughout
the City.

Housina Element

The Housing Element is intended to identify and summarize existing and future housing
needs and to maintain the affordable housing stock, which has allowed many of its
senior residents to live independently. The Housing Element includes the following
goals:

· Promote housing choice for all of its residents, including opportunities for seniors to
live independently and affordable housing provided by the private sector.
· Maintain the existing housing stock and eliminate substandard housing.
· Address the concern for special needs housing and provide government assistance
to people displaced by the redevelopment efforts of private projects.
· Identify historically significant housing.

Currently, Sunny Isles Beach is attracting quality and diverse condominium and mixed-
use projects throughout the Collins Avenue corridor. Some of these projects include the
Trump Royale Condo and the Trump Palace Condo, with 278 units within each building.

As of 2000, there were approximately 12,976 housing units within the City. As indicated
in Table 3.9, the largest numbers of housing are contained in multi-family structures with
20 or more units. There are less than 500 detached single-family homes, which are not
anticipated to increase greatly, due to the fact that the single-family lots have been built-
out. Any new construction will only be small infill development. In contrast, the multi-
family structures with 20 or more units will see a large increase as more redevelopment
projects are underway along the Collins Avenue corridor. The following table describes
the housing situation in Sunny Isles Beach in 2000.

City of Sunny Isles Beach -
2005 Draft Evaluation and Appraisal Report

Rev. 6/29/2005
Page 47
