..

School Capacity and Location

Sunny Isles Beach is within District Two of the Miami-Dade County School District.
Although there are no schools within the city limits of Sunny Isles Beach, a major issue
identified by the City is better facility planning coordination between the municipality and
the Miami-Dade County School Board. There are currently three elementary schools,
one middle school and one high schools in which students residing in City of Sunny
Isles Beach may attend, Table 3.8 is a listing of all school facilities servicing the City:

Table 3.8
School Facilities Serving Sunny Isles Beach

Elementarv Middle Hiah
Ruth K. Boone, Highland Oaks

Source: http://www.dadeschools.net/9023/04Profiles.htm

Since the City does not currently contain public educational facilities, it is not required to
analyze these services in accordance with Rule RJ-5.016(1) (b) F.A.C. However, due to
Sunny Isles Beach's acknowledgement of the need for coordination between the City
and the Miami-Dade School Board and the understanding that an educational facility will
be built in the future, a school analysis has been included.

Chapter 163,3191 (2)(k), as amended by Senate Bill 360, calls for coordination between
municipalities and the counties for school planning. The City of Sunny Isles Beach has
entered into an interlocal agreement, as required by the Florida Statutes, and
recognizes the importance of accommodating new students brought on by the growth of
residential communities. A new elementary school was recently approved unanimously
by the City Commission. The school will be planned for within the community to relieve
the capacity of some of the existing schools. As new residential communities are being
built, the City is reviewing the need for any additional educational facilities to further
accommodate growth.

Although there are no schools within the city limits of Sunny Isles Beach at this time, a
major issue identified by the City is better facility planning coordination between the
municipality and the Miami-Dade County School Board in order to build a school in the
City. Table 3.9 shows the figures in student enrollment and capacity in 2004 of the
schools serving Sunny Isles Beach.

City of Sunny Isles Beach -
2005 Evaluation and Appraisal Report

Rev. 9/15/2005
Page 53
