<br />MH'(Ur<~'S.COMM I SS I UN <br /> <br />Fax:3056737096 <br /> <br />JUI1 21 '01 <br /> <br />8:26 P.06 <br /> <br />'WHEREAS, the financial losses that will be incurred following the impact of even a minimal <br />hurricane on these critically eroded shoreline areas will by far over-shadow the implementation cost of the <br />Erosion Control Program; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Miami~Dade County Commission has historically demonstrated a commitment to <br />the preservation of the Region's beaches, and now must recognize the critical public safety, environmental <br />and economic need to identify the necessary funds to ensure there is no delay in the restoration and <br />maintenance of our beaches of Miami-Dade County's Coastal Municipalities~ Bal Harbour, Key Biscayne, <br />Miami Beach, Sunny Isles and Surfside. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF COASTAL MAYORS <br />OF MLUfi~DADE COUNTY, that the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Commission are requested to direct <br />the Department of Environmental Resources Management to expeditiously implement the innovative erosion <br />control and sand recycling system demonstration project developed for the County's critically eroded beaches <br />including: <br /> <br />1. The immediate expansion of the Miami Beach Innovative Erosion Control and Sand Recycling <br />Demonstration Project to provide similar erosion protection measures for the sandy beaches along <br />Sunny Isles Beach, Key Biscayne and Virginia Key. <br /> <br />2_ The submission of a Project Implementation Plan, Project Completion Schedule and a Project Budget <br />Recommendation to the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners for review and approval by July <br />2001. <br /> <br />3. Completion of the Consultant selection process for the performance of the required coastal engineering <br />and permitting services required for the development of the Project and September 2001. <br /> <br />4. Negotiations with the Army Corps of Engineers to obtain reimbursement for the Federal share of the <br />Proj ect implementation costs. <br /> <br />5. The submission of Project Status Reports, on a quarterly basis, to the Mayor and Board of County <br />Commissioners and the Council of Coastal Mayors of Miami-Dade County. <br /> <br />6. The Council of Coastal Mayors requests that the Miami-Dade County Commission identify the <br />necessary funds to implement a comprehensive renourishment and retention program for the beaches <br />ofMiami~Dade County's Coastal Municipalities; Bal Harbour, Key Biscayne.
