MaltS <br />cftiej of Pofiu <br /> <br />TO: The Commission, City Manager, and Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach <br /> <br />FROM: Fred Maas, Chief of Police <br /> <br />DATE: September 20,2001 <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Purchase of Police Equipment from Approved Police Facilities Impact <br />Fees. <br /> <br />Recommendation: <br /> <br />That the City Commission approve the expenditure of approximately $17,160.00 to <br />Lou's gunshop, for the approved purchase of capital equipment for the police <br />department from Impact Fees, in the form of 40 police firearms to replace our current <br />outdated models. <br /> <br />Reasons: <br /> <br />The current weapon utilized is a 9MM Sig Sauro This weapon is basically, obsolete <br />in almost all police agencies today. The recommended firearm, specifically by <br />federal agencies including the FBI is the 40 caliber. This weapon provides more <br />firepower (meaning additional rounds), the weapon is proven more accurate, <br />maintenance is less and the weapon more durable providing a greater life expectancy <br />for the weapon. The choice of manufacturer for our purchases is Glock and Sig Sauer <br />Inc. <br /> <br />In today's war against crime, it is a well-known fact that criminals have armed <br />themselves with the most sophisticated weapons available to many cases, their arsenal <br />has outclassed police agencies.
