Russo,City Manager /'1
DATE: May 15, 2003 1..
RE: ACQUISITION OF PROPERTY AT 18080 COLLINS AVENUE
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached resolution establishing the
necessity of acquiring the property located at 18080 Collins Avenue, through purchase or
condemnation.
REASONS
Currently, the Sunny Isles Beach City Hall is located in a shopping plaza, from which the City is
forced to provide essential services to residents. As this is a temporary office, the City purchased
the property at 18050 Collins Avenue to build a permanent City Hall/Govemment Center
Complex. This new government center will be the central operation center for all municipal
departments, including the police and public works departments.
However, due to the tremendous growth and the continuing high level of development within the
City (which has increased the need for municipal service) the City needs to acquire additional
property near the proposed City Hall site. The owners of the property adjacent to the City Hall
site were contacted in reference to acquiring the property through a sale. However, the owner
has rebuffed any attempts by the City to acquire the property.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The availability of alternate sites, costs, plans, environmental and safety issues have been
considered by staff. It has been determined that the City will not be able to maintain the level of
service that is consistent with its development unless the City acquires the property in question
and ownership of the property is vested in the City.
Agenda Item
Rcncal Car-Eminent Domain Agenda Memn
Date
