Russo, City Manager /'if
DATE: July 17,2003
RE: CONTRIBUTION TO BISCAYNE BAY SOCIETY PROJECT OF FLORIDA
INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Commission approve the attached resolution authorizing a charitable
contribution to the Biscayne Bay Society ("Society") of Florida International University ("FIV") for
the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus Project("Project").
REASONS
After initial meetings with the Mayor, the Society has extended an invitation to the City to become a
co-partner in the Project to inform surrounding residents of the many adult events taking place. Their
goal is to bring activities, such as specialized classes, lectures, speakers, etc. to the Biscayne Bay
Campus, for the enjoyment of neighboring residents. They seek a nominal Five Thousand Dollar
($5,000.00) contribution from the City, for programming that we could not otherwise afford or have
the facilities to provide.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
FIU is hoping to get area establishments and surrounding municipalities involved in the Project.
Municipalities and businesses were invited to a meeting at which FIU discussed the program and one
of its components, Second Tuesdays at Biscayne Bay Campus,in detail.
Second Tuesdays is a cultural events program proposed to consist of a series of eight (8)events that
will take place from October to April on the second Tuesday of each month, at the Biscayne Bay
Campus; hence the name "Second Tuesday at Biscayne Bay Campus." It will offer activities that are
educational, rewarding, and stimulating at little or no cost to participants. Further, it will provide
numerous volunteer opportunities for our citizens.
Overall, this program will be beneficial to our residents and visitors and it can be incorporated into
our existing Cultural Events Program. We will utilize our shuttle bus service for the convenience of
our residents attending these events.
CJR/pw
Fiu-&mond Tuesday Donation Agenda Memo
