It is reported that in most
cases of abuse, offenders usually abuse both women and children in the household. In any
case there are numerous concerns for victims of abuse. Because the department operates
under a mandatory policy when probable cause is established, officers must be diligent in
securing the necessary evidence to ensure a prosecution. Successful prosecution often
hinges on the photographic evidence of injuries. In an effort to improve the collection and
management of photographic evidence, the department wishes to upgrade their evidence
collections process for domestic violence cases.

Proqram Description
In keeping with today's computer literate society, more and more police departments are
updating and improving the way they collect and handle police records. The Sunny Isles
Beach Police department in particular has determined a need to improve their means of
tracking evidence. Currently there is both training and equipment available for what is now
called digital photography evidence gathering. Use of high mega pixel cameras will enable
officers to access photos on an as need basis without having to request records from a third
party. Additionally, software used to store photos will also be used maintain the evidence files
allowing for future use, such as court cases. At present evidence photos have to be requested
from a technician, are sometimes lost or even destroyed.

In the 2006/2007 fiscal year, the department will use grant funds to purchase digital cameras,
which will enable officers to maintain and track photo evidence digitally. These cameras will
be distributed to the detective bureau and road patrol unit. The department will improve their
records management system using funds to improve the maintenance and tracking of police
evidence. Grant funds will be used to purchase these high resolution cameras for the DV unit.
