Edelcup, Mayor

~

December 13,2007

RE: Proposed Changes to City's Advisory Committees

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution terminating, creating, and
continuing certain advisory committees.

REASONS:

The City's Code provides that the City Commission may have as many standing committees as
deemed necessary and that the City Commission may establish or terminate such Committees from
time to time. I have conducted a review of the City's existing advisory committees and have found
(1) Community Activities and Health Committee duplicates the work of our Cultural and Human
Services Department and (2) the Traffic and Safety Committee is hampered because the major
thoroughfares in the city are State or County roads. As such, I propose that we terminate the
Community Activities and Health Committee and the Traffic and Safety Committee.

Additionally, I propose that we create a new advisory committee - the "Community Awareness
Committee" - to assist us with matters affecting community awareness. I would like to continue the
Long Range Planning and Intergovernmental Relations Committee, the Tourism and Development
Committee, and the Education/Schools Committee. However, I would like to add a caveat that the
Education/Schools Committee sunset upon the opening of the new K-8 school.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The City's Advisory Committees moving forward will be (1) Community Awareness Committee; (2)
Long Range Planning and Intergovernmental Relations Committee; (3) Tourism and Development
Committee; and (4) Education/Schools Committee.

NSE/pw

To be comPleted bv Department Head To be completed by City Clerk's Office
Funding available: Approval: Agenda Item No.: I oK
Finance Department City Manager lo1.'J3--bl
Commission Meeting Date:

Cover Memo Advisory Committee Term, Created, Continued
