John Szerlag, City Manager

Fred A. Maas, Chief of Police
Michael A. Grandinetti, Police Captain

April 17,2008

Approval to Expend Partial Forfeiture (DOJ) Funds for the Implementation of
Phase II, Technology Disaster Recovery Plan (Police Dept.)

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the City Commission approve the expenditure of partial Federal (DOJ)
Forfeiture Funds, previously awarded to the Police Department as the results of investigative
participation in forfeiture and seizure cases. These funds are permissible by law to be spent for the
purchases of police equipment and other law enforcement activities. It is requested that we be
permitted to utilize $75,000.00 of said funds on deposit for such purpose.

BACKGROUND:

The l.T. Department has developed a multi-phase disaster recovery plan for the City's current
infrastructure. Phase II of this plan will develop and prepare the Police Departments infrastructure for
compatibility with the City's overall Disaster Recovery Plan to provide for virtualization and off-site
data storage.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

One of the benefits of participating in and providing personnel into high intensity narcotics
investigations is the sharing of confiscated proceeds for the enhancement of law enforcement. All of
the below listed items are authorized expenditures and are designed towards charitable and crime
prevention programs, enhancement of law enforcement equipment as well as legal costs associated
with the asset forfeiture process.

The project will begin the second week in May 2008 and will be completed by August 2008.

Funding available:

Approv

106
~-/7-0~

Agenda Item No.:

Commission Meeting Date:
