<br />Because the Sunny Isles Beach Community School is located within walking distance, many young <br />school children are also walking to school and need instruction in the proper procedures for safely <br />crossing the street. <br /> <br />These instructional courses will be done as part of a "Bicycle Rodeo" held at the school. with the <br />permission of the parents and will target the elementary aged students. The course will teach the basic <br />rules of the road. balance and traffic skills while riding. as well as teaching skills to help them survive <br />on the road. For example: <br /> <br />. How to cross busy streets without being hit by a car <br /> <br />. How to look back without swerving <br /> <br />. How to ride straight without hitting potholes <br /> <br />Our goal will be to insure that each child who participates can demonstrate proficiency in bicycle <br />handling. learn the importance of a safety helmet use, as well as understand the importance of <br />crossing the street properly, being alert and paying attention to the cross walk signals. In addition to <br />instruction on DARE classes, crime prevention and bicycle safety, officers will also provide counseling <br />to truants during the school year. Truant referrals and their parents will receive counseling when <br />needed. JAG funding will be used to purchase program equipment and supplies necessary to initiate <br />ongoing school policing services in Sunny Isles Beach. Miscellaneous grant funds will include pencils, <br />pad folios. and other program supplies. <br />
