Edelcup

DATE: January 21,2010

RE: Resolution supporting Haitian relief efforts

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the City Commission approve the attached Resolution approving the
payment of$10,000.00 to the Miami-Dade League of Cities to provide local support to Haiti as a
result of the January 12,2010, earthquake.

BACKGROUND:

On January 12, 2010, the island of Haiti was struck by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, and
according to The American Red Cross, approximately three million people, or one-third of
Haiti's population, has been affected by the earthquake. It is estimated that well over 100,000
people have died, and the numbers could go as high as 500,000 people.

Due to the fact, that the Island of Haiti is only 710 miles from the Miami area, the devastation
that Haiti has immediately experienced as a result of the earthquake will directly impact the
economy of the Miami-Dade area, including the City of Sunny Isles Beach. The situation in
Haiti is of utmost public concern, and the stability of the Country, as well as the health and
welfare of its residents, is of concern not only to the United States as a whole, but to the South
Florida area, in particular.

Other cities within the County have agreed to deposit funds into this account, and the Miami-
Dade League of Cities will provide these funds to established local and international charities
that will receive the relief funds. These funds will assist local charities which are assisting
earthquake victims in South Florida as well as Haiti.

Upon approval of this Resolution, the City Manager will send $10,000.00 to be deposited into an
account established by the Miami-Dade League of Cities in support of Haitian relief efforts.

Agenda~ , 0 .T
Date 1-21.... 10
