Scope included the re-design of the access to the park, the organization of the parking and circulation, tapping new opportunities for recreation activities and re-organizing existing activities. Homestead Bayfront Park is one of the five Miami-Dade County Heritage parks. The design calls for sustainable design solutions and restoration of green space into a biodiverse ecological habitat. Estimated Cost: $18 Million 19a(3) BRIEF DESCRIPTION - Check here if project performed with current firm: 19c(1) TITLE AND LOCATION (City and State): Belle Isle Park, Miami Beach Belle Isle, Venetian Islands, Miami Beach, Florida 19c(2) YEAR COMPLETED - PROFESSIONAL SERVICES: 2002 19c(2) YEAR COMPLETED - CONSTRUCTION (If applicable): Under construction 19c(3) BRIEF DESCRIPTION (Brief scope, size, cost etc.) AND SPECIFIC ROLE: Schematics through Construction Administration of a 2-acre park in Miami Beach. Belle Isle is the "Central Park" to Belle Isle. It is surrounded by high rise condominiums. It also acts as the gateway to the Venetian Islands from Miami Beach. Belle Isle Park, located on the only natural island of the Venetian Islands between Miami and Miami Beach, is a major open space surrounded on three sides by high-density condominium buildings, and Venetian Causeway to the north. The space offered no walkways or large open spaces for play, but was mostly used by residents to walk the dogs. SMDS was asked to create a plan to attract more residents to use the park, and responded with a plan which provided for a range of recreational opportunities. A large elliptical open space formed by a walkway, coupled with a "Bark Park" and numerous small paved seating areas - located by each of the park entry/street crosswalks - allows for both passive and active play activities. Numerous existing trees and palms were preserved or transplanted to create and define the park's spaces.
